Product Hunt Playbook

Get #1 Product of the Day on Product Hunt.

Product Hunt gets 4.6M visits a month, and its ranking resets every 24 hours. Most launches lose before lunch — not because the product is weak, but because of when and how they posted. We tracked the last 50 winners to find out what actually works.

The exact checklist

What Product Hunt itself, and the makers who study it, actually say to do

Pulled straight from Product Hunt's own launch guide and Demand Curve's Product Hunt playbook — not repackaged generic advice. This is the checklist our agents score every launch against.

Before you launch

  • Have 400+ people warmed up before you post. Product Hunt amplifies momentum, it doesn't create it from zero.
  • Join the community 3-4 weeks early: comment, upvote, help other makers. Newly created accounts voting for you get penalized by the algorithm.

Your listing

  • Tagline: 60 characters max, no gimmicks — product name only, no emojis or marketing language.
  • Thumbnail 240×240px, gallery at least 2 images at 1270×760px.
  • Direct URL only — no bit.ly, no UTM-tagged links.
  • 53% of Product of the Day winners since 2021 included a video.

The first comment

  • 70% of Product of the Day / Week / Month winners posted a maker's first comment introducing the team and the problem.
  • Ask for feedback, never for upvotes — it's against Product Hunt's own community rules, and the algorithm can detect the pattern.

Timing

  • Tuesday to Thursday. Skip Monday (catch-up day) and Friday (weekend tune-out).
  • 12:01 AM PT — Product Hunt doesn't adjust for time zones, so this is what maximizes your full 24-hour window.

The data

We pulled the last 50 winners. Here's the real pattern.

Every #1 Product of the Day from May 26 to Jul 14, 2026, pulled directly from Product Hunt's own daily archive — scroll the table, every row is checkable. Not a curated sample.

DateProductTaglineScore

33 / 50

33 of the last 50 #1 Products of the Day say "AI" or "agent" directly in their tagline — 66%. Not all of them (Vercel Drop, Firma.dev, Google Search Profiles didn't need to), so it's a real signal, not a rule. That's the difference between a category to chase and a pattern to read.

Also worth noting: ChatCut hit #1 with only 105 upvotes but 761 comments on Jul 10 — proof that comment volume, not just vote count, is part of what the ranking rewards.

How we build this

This is the process behind the table above

The 50 days above weren't pulled by hand for show — this is the actual method, running continuously. No dashboard screenshot here, because we're not going to show you a product screen that doesn't exist yet. This is the honest version: what happens, in order.

1

Scan

Pull every day's #1 Product of the Day, its tagline, category, and score, straight from Product Hunt's own archive.

2

Score

Check each entry against the exact checklist above: tagline length, video presence, maker-comment timing, launch day-of-week — plus the pattern (does the tagline name AI/agent, what category, vote-to-comment ratio).

3

Cross-reference

Compare against your product's own niche and positioning, so the pattern isn't generic PH advice — it's specific to what you're launching.

4

Alert

Surface what's actually shifting this week, before your launch day, not a static playbook written once and never touched again.

Why this matters for you

This is what "we know where you belong" actually means

50 real days is a pattern, not a research study — we're not going to dress it up as more than it is. But it's exactly the kind of tracking our agents do continuously, not as a one-off: which categories are winning this week, which taglines are landing, what the comment patterns look like before you post. Scaling that from 50 days of manual pulling to an always-on feed is the actual product.
